Point-and-Chat®: Talking Email, Instant Messaging, and Twitter
for users of Augmentative and Assistive Communiciation (AAC) devices from Point-and-Read, Inc.
General Computer Requirements
Point-and-Chat requires a computer running Windows XP (with Service Pack 2 installed), Windows Vista, or Windows 7. Point-and-Chat will not run on a Mac.
The computer must have at least a 400 MHz processor with 128 MB RAM. It may need more if using WiFi to connect to the Internet.
Computer Storage Requirements
Storage requirements for the first Point-and-Chat program you download.
Storage requirements for Vista and Windows 7: The computer needs a minimum of 81 MB of temporary free space on the hard drive to install Point-and-Chat IM. However, after installation, this can be cut back to about 21 MB of storage space by deleting temporary files. (The downloaded zip file is 40.1 MB and the extracted "unzipped" setup files are another 40.2 MB. After "unzipping" them, the original downloaded zip files can be deleted. Installation will add back about 20 MB for the program itself, but the "unzipped" setup files can then be deleted.)
Storage requirements for XP: Point-and-Chat IM requires free helper programs from Microsoft that are built into Vista and Windows 7 but not every XP. These programs will be installed by Point-and-Chat on a Windows XP computer if the Point-and-Chat installation does not find them already there. These helper programs include text-to-speech voices and may require as much as another 500 MB.
Each additional Point-and-Chat Program you download.
Storage requirements for Vista and Windows 7: You will still need 81 MB of temporary space to download and install another Point-and-Chat program. However, if you then delete the original zip files and setup files, the additional Point-and-Chat program will take up only 5 MB of additional space.
Storage requirements for XP: You will still need 81 MB of temporary space to download and install another Point-and-Chat program. However, the additional Point-and-Chat program uses the same helper programs from Microsoft as any previously installed Point-and-Chat program. If you delete the original zip files and setup files the second Pont-and-Chat program will still take up only 5 MB of additional space.
Email account: In order to send and receive email using Point-and-Chat, you need an email account. The email account has to be accessible via the POP3 protocol. If your email account is provided by your Internet Service Provider, it is most likely in the POP3 protocol. In addition, many of the web-based email solutions (including Gmail from Google, AOL, Yahoo mail, and Hotmail from Microsoft) are accessible by POP3. You will need your account information to set up Point-and-Chat to send and receive email using your email account.
