H. G. Wells was born in 1866 in England. He grew up in a working class home. His life changed when he was eight years old and broke his leg. During the long time it took to mend, he read much and developed a love for books.

Herbert George Wells first apprenticed to a draper, later became a teacher and finally a successful writer. He wrote novels, histories, political pamphlets, and popular treatments of science. But he is most remembered now for his science fiction, including The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, and The War of the Worlds. He predicted modern inventions such as the battle tank and the atomic bomb.

Wells criticized the role that privilege and ancestry played in English society at that time. For much of his life, he believed socialism would create a better world.
