Editor's Note: This story was first published in 1878, only a couple of years after the telephone had been invented. Although Mark Twain did have a telephone in his own home in 1877, it would be almost 40 years before a person could make a telephone call from Maine to California -- and decades more before a person in New York could call Hawaii.
