"There was one season," said Uncle Remus, pulling thoughtfully at his whiskers, "when Brer Fox said to himself that he suspected he'd better plant a goober-patch.

"He'd wanted to grow some goober peas, that some folks call peanuts."

The little boy is stretched out across the floor of Uncle Remus's cabin. He is wearing a gray shirt and maroon trousers. His arms are propped by a yellow and blue pillow up behind his head as he leans against the wall. He is smiling at Uncle Remus, a bald black man with a grey beard and mustache. Next to him, Uncle Remus is sitting with his elbows on his knees on top of an upside-down crate. He is wearing a dingy white shirt and blue slacks, and is smiling down at the little blond boy.
